Parent Education and
Family Stabilization
Course
Florida law recognizes that a lot of children experience the
short-term and long-term effects of their parents’ divorce. To help
children through the transition, Florida statute section 61.21
requires that all parents complete a parenting education class. The
4-hour class is called the Parent Education and Family Stabilization
Course. This Florida parenting class is designed to educate divorcing
parents about the consequences their divorce may have on the family’s
children and to teach ways that parents can lessen or avoid these
consequences.
The parenting class touches on several different
issues in the typical Florida divorce such as custody, child care,
visitation, and child support. Those who take the parenting course in
Florida will likely learn about the following topics:
- How to work out child-rearing issues between parents
- The emotions involved for parents and children during separation
and divorce
- Examining family relationships and family dynamics
- Discussing financial responsibilities, spousal abuse, child
abuse, and child neglect
- How children may react during and after the divorce
- The transitions children endure emotionally, physically, and
socially because of a divorce
